Netflix subscribers are in for a treat this Halloween as they search for the perfect horror flick to send shivers down their spines.
As the most haunting day of the year descends, film enthusiasts are sifting through their creepy collections to find the ultimate scare for the weekend.
While there’s no shortage of iconic horror films to stir up some old-school terror, a 2014 hidden gem might just be the ideal pick to round off an epic monster movie binge.
Despite its decade on the shelf, it remains as bone-chilling and relevant as ever, especially with buzz building around the recently announced sequel.
The movie in question is It Follows, featuring the renowned scream queen Maika Monroe from Longlegs, now ready to stream on Netflix, reports the Mirror.
Helmed by director David Robert Mitchell, this eerie supernatural tale follows university student Jay Height, played by Monroe, who finds herself stalked by an enigmatic entity after a sexual encounter with her boyfriend Hugh (Jake Weary).
Not only does It Follows deliver a slew of spine-tingling moments and jump scares, but it has also been lauded for its original and unsettling exploration of sexuality and gender, cementing its status as one of the top horror movies of the new millennium.
IGN even placed it high on their roundup of the 31 Best Modern Horror Movies earlier this year, commenting: “Attach any subtext you want – the film can be read very flexibly and plays with familiar slasher tropes-but It Follows is also deeply frightening.
“If you’ve ever caught a glimpse of someone from the corner of your eye and wondered ‘are they following me?’ then this film might just be for you – or perhaps not.”
Adam Fleet, writing for The Guardian, hailed the movie, writing: “The best horror films of the 21st century? You can’t go past It Follows.”
He further praised the film, saying: “It Follows is one of the best and most original horror movies of the 21st century so far,” and noted its unique position in the genre: “Sharing common ground with the genre greats while still contributing plenty of its own.”
Describing the film’s atmosphere, he remarked: “It’s tense, suspenseful and unsettling, so it makes for the perfect spooky season viewing.”
BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb ranked it highly among recent horror films, commenting: “Think about this idea too much and it can really unsettle you.
“I confess when I first watched the film, I was expecting more scares, more jumps, more shocks, but this isn’t that sort of movie, for the most part. It’s a thinker, a chiller, a messed-up film that wants to mess you up.”
A passionate fan on Reddit sparked a debate by asking: “Is It Follows one of the greatest horror films of all time?
“Came out in 2014, the ‘monster’ is easily one of the scariest and most original in the last decade. The premise is equally terrifying. No matter where you go, the monster can follow you.
“There’s no planning an escape cause it could just walk into a plane and follow you to anywhere you think you’re a few hours ahead of it.”
Ensure you view this one with companions as It Follows will leave you looking over your shoulder and scrutinising every corner for days to come.
It Follows is available to stream on Netflix.
