National League side Tamworth knock Huddersfield out of FA Cup after boss ditches holiday | Football | Sport

National League outfit Tamworth have proved the magic is still alive in the FA Cup after knocking out League One side Huddersfield in the first round.

Tamworth, 16th in the National League, have incredibly progressed to the second round after Huddersfield goalkeeper Chris Maxwell put into his own net as he failed to deal with a long throw-in on the stroke of half-time.

Andy Peak, who had to abandon a romantic holiday with his wife for the FA Cup clash, and his Tamworth squad will find out who they face in the next round in Sunday evening’s draw.

The match was Tamworth’s first appearance in the first round proper of the FA Cup since 2014. And the scoreline between the two sides, who were six divisions apart as recently as the 2018-19 campaign, could have been larger if the hosts capitalised.

Daniel Creaney almost made it 2-0 straight after Tamworth went ahead, but he was denied by Maxwell when he was through on goal.

Huddersfield put some pressure late on in the match, but the non-league side were resolute to enjoy their finest night yet.

And Peaks will be absolutely delighted and relieved with the win after cancelling his holiday with his other half Sarah to prepare for tonight’s cup encounter.

Peaks had planned to go away with his wife to Bridgnorth before the football got in their way.

Before the match, he told PA news agency: “It’s half-term this week at college and much to my wife’s disappointment, we were supposed to be going away Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“So I have had to cancel because football has taken over unfortunately. It has worked in a good way because I can give it a bit more attention than I normally would.

“We were going to go to Bridgnorth in the cottage, I was going to do a bit of fishing, a bit of walking and chilling. That is on the back burner, that can wait until another day.

“My wife will be here, she’ll be 100 per cent behind me, she’s been born and bred football when she met me. I’ll make it up to her at some point and hopefully we can do it on Saturday after victory on Friday night.”
