Your old Galaxy Watch is getting a huge free update from Samsung

If you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy Watch strapped to your wrist then you could be in for a big free update very soon. It looks as though the Galaxy Watch 6 is about to get a software update that will give it One UI 6, bringing it up to speed with the newest Galaxy Watch 7 line up.

Samsung released the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra back in July with the newest version of One UI software based on Google’s Wear OS 5 operating system. Loading up new tech products with the very latest software is to be expected, and is often used as a selling point. But in recent years, Samsung has been quick to make sure customers with older devices get timely updates too.

This is also true of the firm’s smartphones. Thought the Galaxy S24 series of phones launched with exclusive Galaxy AI features, now many of these tools can be used on older models as software updates have rolled out.

Android Police spotted that Galaxy Watch 6 owners who are voluntarily running beta software on their wearables have now been sent the stable version of One UI 6. Beta testers opt in to try out software on their devices before it’s ready for public release. The closure of the beta program means it won’t be long until all Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic models get the newest software.

One UI 6 introduced a new Energy Score that presents you with a numerical score every day to help you gauge how ready you are to exercise or if you should take it easy. It collates physical activity with sleep, heart rate and other metrics to give you this score. It’s similar to the way the Whoop 4.0 tracker and Oura Ring 3 present health scores.

The free update will also bring more Galaxy AI features to your wrist with more detailed data and feedback on heart rate, sleep and other measurements. It’ll also bring a subtle font update across the board, which could go some way to making your older watch feel new and fresh.

If your watch is even older, perhaps a Galaxy Watch 5 or 4, we still reckon it’s not long until you will also get the upgrade in a free software push. Keep an eye out over the coming weeks and months, as Samsung continues to roll out Android 14 to older phones and One UI 6 to older watches.
