Emma Raducanu moves on from ‘cheating’ row after meeting up with rival | Tennis | Sport

Emma Raducanu has shown there is no bad blood between herself and Amanda Anisimova following their controversial meeting at the Australian Open.

The young Brit went up against Anisimova, who she considers a close friend, in the second round at Melbourne Park. She prevailed in straight sets but the match was mired by controversy due to Raducanu taking a medical timeout.

She called for the physio in the early stages of the contest, with a lower back issue causing discomfort. Raducanu won six consecutive games after returning to the court, leading to accusations of gamesmanship and ‘cheating’ on social media.

Any notion of a rift between Raducanu and Anisimova was put to bed on Sunday, though, with the pair enjoying a sweet moment together.

Anisimova shared a picture of herself and Raducanu on her Instagram story, having met up ahead of the Singapore Open. They were both grinning at the camera with no sign of any bitterness after what happened in Melbourne.

The snap was posted just hours before Raducanu suffered an immediate exit in Singapore, losing at the hands of Cristina Bucsa despite winning the opening set.

It was her first match since splitting with former coach Nick Cavaday, who stepped back from his role following her Australian Open exit to ‘prioritise getting back to full health’.

In Singapore, she was accompanied by fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura as well as her mother, Renee, who watched from the stands.

Raducanu was unable to make the most of her service games, only winning eight of the 33 points she played on her second serve. She was also broken four times in the decisive third set and lost her serve nine times in total.

It remains to be seen where Raducanu will go from here, with the 21-year-old having endured a tough start to the new year. Earlier this month, she was dismantled by Iga Swiatek in the third round of the Australian Open.

She went into that match as the clear underdog but was left frustrated by the one-sided nature of her defeat, describing the 6-0 6-1 scoreline as ‘harsh’.

“I didn’t play well and she played very well,” said Raducanu. “Given the preparation we had, we have to be grateful to be in this position. The scoreline was quite harsh.

“I look back and know exactly what I need to do. I’m very clear on what happened. If I’m not necessarily able to hold my service games or dictate, it seeps into the rest of my game.”
