Man Utd ‘reach £8.3m agreement’ as Ruben Amorim continues rebuild after transfer deadline | Football | Sport

PSV Eindhoven have reached an agreement to sign Tyrell Malacia on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season, according to reports. Malacia is set to return to the Netherlands, almost three years after arriving at Old Trafford from Feyenoord in a £15million deal.

The 25-year-old left-back was named Erik ten Hag’s first signing as United boss and made 39 appearances in all competitions throughout the 2022/23 season.

However, he missed the entirety of last term after suffering a pre-season knee injury, which required multiple surgeries to mend.

Malacia returned to action after 18 months away in November and featured another seven times under Ruben Amorim.

But the Dutchman has struggled to rediscover his groove after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines, especially as the left-wing-back in Amorim’s demanding system.

The British transfer window slammed shut on Monday night, one day earlier than the Netherlands.

And PSV have taken advantage by reportedly sealing a deal to sign Malacia on loan until the end of the season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch Eredivisie club have an option to buy Malacia worth around £8.3m in the summer.

The report adds that United will include a 30 per cent sell-on clause should the move become permanent, which would see the club profit from any future transfer.

Amorim withdrew Malacia at half-time for the fourth time in his five starts this season against FCSB last Thursday.

And after full-time, the United boss poured uncertainty over the defender’s future by admitting he didn’t fit as a wing-back.

“We will see [about Malacia’s future]. What I know is that it’s really hard on Malacia. It is a long time without playing, and then it’s hard to play a lot of games,” Amorim explained.

“A player like him is a full-back. He played with the national team outside and inside, but sometimes, in this system, it’s hard for him because he’s not so offensive.

“He can play as one of the three defenders if we have more possession and more control of the games. It’s a really difficult context for him. But he’s our player, and we are going to help him.”

United have facilitated Malacia’s exit after completing the £29m signing of Lecce left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu in January, addressing a primary problem position.

The 20-year-old could be thrown straight into the team in Friday’s FA Cup clash against Leicester City, with Luke Shaw still working his way back to match fitness.
