Drivers urged to buy £5 accessory as tens of thousands of cars stolen

Almost all new cars come with keyless entry in order to make it easier for owners to unlock their vehicle whilst carrying bulky items.

However, thieves are often able to intercept the signal, tricking the car into thinking the owner and their key are nearby.

By putting the key fob in a Faraday pouch, which features a metal lining, drivers can completely block the signal when the keys are not in use.

Faraday pouches are available online or from most motoring accessory shops for around £5. Alternatively, drivers can put their key fob in other metal-lined objects, such as the microwave.

In addition to a pouch, Ayvens recommended that drivers also fit traditional accessories, such as a steering lock or wheel clamp, which will make it longer for thieves to steal a car.

They added: “Adding a physical barrier, like a steering lock, can make a vehicle harder to steal, while fitting a tracking device significantly increases the chances of recovery if the worst happens.

“Kirwan stresses that combining multiple security layers can be the most effective deterrent against keyless car theft.”
