Louis Rees-Zammitt set to make NFL announcement as immediate deadline given | NFL | Sport

Louis Rees-Zammit says he will make an announcement over his future by the end of next week. The former rugby star has been without a franchise after his contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars was not renewed.

Rees-Zammit earned a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs to play as a running back in March 2024 but he failed to make the 53-man roster and was consequently released.

The 24-year-old refused to give up on his American dream and signed for the Jaguars but he struggled for minutes and is now looking for his next venutre.

It has been suggested that Rees-Zammit could return to rugby to save Wales, who are on a grim 14-match losing streak.

And the former Gloucester star has revealed he is set to make a decision immediately.

“I’m definitely active,” Rees-Zammitt said on ITV when asked if he was looking for an NFL team.

“I’ll make a decision on where I am next season by next week.”

Rees-Zammitt may still have a bright future in NFL as he received a glowing reference from Chiefs assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Taub.

He told AFP: “I love him. I really like him. He was a hard worker. He didn’t have the base fundamentals that these guys have. They’ve been playing football since fourth grade. He was just starting. The football instincts, that’s where he kind of lacked.

“Athletic skills? He had them everywhere. Those little small intangibles that he didn’t have, it’s going to take time. I hope he doesn’t give up. I hope he keeps trying to achieve his goal of playing American football.

“These guys have been playing for years. Then you get thrown into that. There’s going to be a learning curve for him. Again, I hope he doesn’t give up. I think after two or three years, if it doesn’t click by then, time to go back to rugby.”
