It’s been rumoured for months, and now Sky has finally revealed what’s coming next. The company has officially uncovered its new Glass (Gen 2) TV, which finally fixes one of the gripes many had with its original connected TV. That’s thanks to new Quantum Dot LED HDR technology, which boosts the colour, contrast, and those all-important blacks. The first Sky Glass TV did face some criticism for not having a crystal clear image, but that seems to be sorted on this all-new model.
Sky says its brighter 4K Quantum Dot display “delivers crystal clear picture, while new advanced HDR and precision contrast enhancement make darks darker and brights brighter”.
Along with boosting the image, Sky also claims the viewing angles have been upgraded – so wherever you sit in the room, you should get a perfect picture.
Auto modes ensure things are set perfectly for the type of content you are watching with the TV switching the settings when you settle down to watch the football of tune into a blockbuster movie.
It’s not just about the viewing experience. Tucked under the screen is a refreshed soundbar with 360-degree Dolby Atmos, which should offer far more immersive audio. There are seven speakers in total, with Sky promising richer bass and clear vocals. It’s also compatible with Dolby Atmos content for even better sound.
Voice control is still included to provide easy access to content, recordings and controls. Playlists also get better with recordings stored in a more easily accessible space.
Simple setup is still a big feature of Sky Glass, with one cable powering the screen, in-built receiver and soundbar. Of course, like the original Glass, Gen 2 is powered by the internet so there’s no need for a dish.
An improved stand also comes as standard with homes not even needing a screwdriver to get things up and running.
It will ship in three colours: Volcanic grey, Arctic silver, and Atlantic blue.
You can buy it starting tomorrow in three sizes: 43-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch. Prices start from £14 per month.
It’s worth noting that the £14 price is just for the TV and not the content, which costs extra.
Commenting on the launch, Fraser Stirling, Global Chief Product Officer for Comcast and Sky said: “We built Sky Glass as a brilliantly simple way for people to watch TV, making it easier to find the things they love from Sky and streaming apps.
“The new Sky Glass Gen 2 gives people our best TV experience yet, with a brighter picture and even more cinematic sound, and with flexible ways to buy it, it’s more affordable than ever to get Sky TV.”
