Philadelphia Eagles stars carried away by their stunning Super Bowl victory prompted several apologies from American news anchors during their championship parade on Sunday. The Eagles thrashed the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in a stunning display last weekend.
Their players paraded their prize to hundreds of thousands of fans in Philadelphia. However, some iconic speeches were not appropriate for the daytime television audience.
“I am a f****** champion!” declared wide receiver AJ Brown with his arms aloft.
“We apologise. Of course, we are on live TV, and we apologise,” said a news anchor. However, it only got worse for the broadcasters bringing the scenes to viewers.
“You guys are tough, you guys are resilient and you know how to f******* fight,” running back Saquon Barkley said into the microphones.
The news anchor cut in by saying: “And we apologize again for Saquon Barkley’s profanity. Live again, live TV in Philly.”
But immediately after that apology, another member of the squad said: “Hey Philly, this city overcomes s***…”
The speech was immediately cut off to prevent more swear words from being aired. “And we apologise again for the profanity,” said the anchor, who was clearly feeling awkward over the number of apologies.
According to Delaware Online, 12 swear words were broadcast during the parade. However, many more were used in speeches which were not heard by television viewers because they were censored by broadcasters.
Eagles players were in high spirits after their remarkable triumph over the two-time defending champions. Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid were soundly beaten in a shock result.
News anchors made it clear that the swearing was a result of the players getting carried away with their celebrations. Fans had gathered for hours in Philadelphia to be in the best positions to see the players take to the stage.
However, a jubilant afternoon was marred by the shootings of two women in Philadelphia. Police said a 27-year-old woman was shot in her left leg and a 20-year-old woman was shot in her upper left thigh.
Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said the two women were shot by a suspect wearing an Eagles shirt after an argument. Both women were taken to hospital and are said to be in a stable condition.
