It’s been eight years since Johnny Depp last starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Since then, the Hollywood star has been through personal life controversies and, having won a libel case against his ex-wife, is now slowly but surely working his way back to major movies.
The 61-year-old’s fans are desperate for him to return in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. And according to Barbossa star Geoffrey Rush, talks have already occurred.
The Aussie actor, who has been through his own courtroom battle which he won, has spoken with Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer about bringing back both swashbucklers.
At first, Rush thought he was done with the role as Barbossa sacrificially kicked the bucket at the end of the last movie, but if Depp’s returning, he’s climbing back on board the ship.
Speaking with Movie Web, Rush shared: “I had a good time on that over a very long period. It was probably 12, 15 years or something, from beginning to end. But after the final chapter, I’ve died twice, and I didn’t want an exhumation. I thought it would have been wrong having sacrificed his life for his own child, yeah, and I thought, That’s cheesy. And then I went, you know… if Johnny [Depp] does it…”
The 73-year-old then shared the content of his talks with the Pirates of the Caribbean producer about how Barbossa and Captain Jack could return.
Rush divulged: “I have had conversations with Jerry [Bruckheimer] saying, you know, [Barbossa] could come back like Hamlet’s father as a ghost. I said, there’s dramatic possibilities in that, but also comedic ones. He just comes back for a couple of scenes to annoy the s*** out of Jack. And that would be a sort of cherry, that would be a button on the whole storyline, because he worked for the king. He became ridiculously wealthy. He got everything, you know, the curse was broken. The Aztec gold was all there. So, yeah, to be able to just come back and annoy Jack and claim narcissistic superpowers over him.”
Come on Disney, give the fans what they want!
