They stress motorists are most likely to receive an Enforceable Fixed Penalty Notice, which usually issues motorists with a £60 fine and three points on their driving licence. 

However, drivers may be given up to 10 days to remove the illegal tint from their vehicles if they are stopped.

A major US town has renewed efforts to stop and warn drivers about tinted windows in the latest crackdown. 

Penalties for running with illegally tinted windows are higher in the States with drivers hit with a fine of around £190 ($250) if caught out. 

Police Major Todd Patalano told WLNE-TV: “Tinted windows are a big problem for policing, especially for the patrol division which is out monitoring violations on the roadway every day.”

BookMyGarage, the leading car service and repair comparison site, has claimed car window tinting can cost anywhere between £50 to £250.

They confirmed officers can check the tinting on both the windscreen and windows on either side of the driver’s seat.

To make matters worse, window visibility can be checked as part of the annual MOT test. 

However, drivers can only fail the test if it is considered that tinting is causing the view of the road to be “significantly impacted”.
