Autumn is a time when the weather is not only colder but rainier, and this means that patios can quickly become overrun with moss that will begin to spread rapidly if not washed away. 

Moss can be extremely difficult to get rid of as its spores can bury themselves into any hard-to-reach nooks in stonework and only a tiny amount needs to remain to begin growing back. 

There are many natural remedies on the best way to get rid of moss but many solutions such as vinegar or baking soda can only kill the surface level of the moss so it will come back in no time. 

However, Joe, a gardening expert and founder of Joe’s Lawncare, has shared that you can “eradicate your moss problem” completely from patios or driveways by turning washing up liquid into an “awesome moss killer”.

He said: “I know this sounds odd, but mixing 60ml of dish soap into four-and-a-half litres of water and then filling up a hand sprayer is one of the most incredible moss-killing recipes you could ever come across.” 

How does washing up liquid get rid of moss? 

It may seem too simple but washing up liquid contains surfactants, which are compounds that reduce surface tension and can penetrate deeply into a surface. 

These surfactants can break down the protective layer around moss and it is difficult for this slimy green substance to absorb water which will kill it off. 

Washing up liquid will also act as a barrier for any spores which try to establish itself so it will not be able to grow back and be a nuisance in the near future. 

How to use washing up liquid to remove moss

You will need:

• 60ml of washing-up liquid 
• Four and a half litres of hot water 
• A big container such as a bucket 

Method

All you need to do is squirt a generous amount of washing-up liquid into a bucket, watering can or empty spray bottle, then add the hot water. 

Pour the solution all over your patio or driveway, and be careful not to get any on nearby grass as while it is non-toxic it will not be healthy for any plants nearby. 

Joe said: “Simply take your mixture outside and spray on any patches of moss you come across, holding your bottle just a couple of inches away as you drench the moss with your  epic creation.”

Make sure it is a clear and sunny day with no chance of rain the next day otherwise the solution can be washed away and not work. 

After one day, the moss should have dried out and wilted, but you will know it has completely died once it turns brown.

Joe said: “Once your moss has turned that weird orangey-brown colour and died, simply grab your rake (I know, I’m sorry) and remove it from your lawn.”
