Major Sky update released today – check your TV for ‘enhanced’ free upgrade


It’s been a very busy month for Sky. The telly provider announced the launch of a new broadband-powered Glass Gen 2 TV last week, which features improved visuals via its upgraded Quantum Dot 4K display and room-filling sound thanks to an upgraded soundbar that’s built into the metal case. Sky also revealed that it will launch a cheaper version of its TV – called Glass Air – later this year which is great news for homes that don’t want a dish or a hefty bill each month.

Those are big upgrades but they are not the only changes taking place this winter. It’s been confirmed that from today, February 18, Sky’s NOW platform is getting a major revamp. For those not in the know, NOW can be accessed on devices such as smart TVs, consoles, tablets and phones without the need long-term Sky subscription.

Most users sign up for 30-day or six-month memberships, which start from around £6.99. It’s a popular way to get access to things such as Sky Entertainment, Sky Cinema and Sky Sports and it’s getting an upgrade.

The major changes are being implemented due to NOW moving from its current system and switching over to technology powered by NBCUniversal instead.

Customers are being promised a “world-class streaming experience” with a fresh look and the ability to find the content they want to watch faster.

“Migrating to NBCU’s Global Streaming Platform means NOW members will benefit from the ongoing delivery of customer features that enhance the viewing experience and leverage the latest technologies and innovations across the platform,” Carli Kerr, Managing Director of NOW & Sky Content, explained.

So, what is new in this update?

Sky says the upgrade will make it easier to track down shows and boxsets that are trending and it will add some rails showing what’s on. Smoother search is also included along with better controls for parents to help keep kids safe.

It’s worth noting that Sky says the NOW brand will remain unchanged. However, the new look and feel will “harness NBCUniversal’s platform to further enhance the viewing experience and deliver a more personalised experience overall.”

Here are some of the upgrades coming to NOW from later next month.

• Sky says the update will make it easier to jump into the shows people are talking about, like The Day of the Jackal or The White Lotus

• There will be new rails, such as Top 10s and along with smoother search options

• For Sports Members, SkySports+ streams will be housed as curated collections, making it easier to get to what they want to watch in one place, such as The Miami Open tennis tournament

• There will be more choice and control for families with the introduction of Kids profiles to deliver over 10,000 episodes of award-winning kids’ content, including shows like Sky Kids Ready Eddie Go! or Boomerang’s What’s New Scooby-Doo – all ad-free.

Sky says the changes are rolling out now, so it should arrive on TVs, tablets and phones soon.
