Cheltenham Festival results: Blackmore claims surprise win as stewards summon trainer | Racing | Sport

Rachael Blackmore produced a Cheltenham Festival cracker to leave the bookies relieved after claiming a surprise victory in the Champions Chase with Captain Guinness.

On a day when the heavy favourites had all been winning (Fact To File in the Brown Advisory and Ballyburn in the Gallagher’s Novices Hurdle) Blackmore caused quite the upset as the 17/2 nine-year-old benefitted from El Fabiolo pulling up early on to take the win.

Winning the race for the fourth time, trainer Henry De Bromhead said: “Obviously after El Fabiolo went you knew then that the race had opened right up and we felt we had a right chance then. Can mistakes happen more at the speed they go in this race, I don’t know. He had his thing at Christmas (fibrillating heart) and I just kept thinking the horse deserved to get his Grade One so much, to get this one is amazing.”

Elsewhere, it was a historic day for Willie Mullins after his son, riding on Jasmin De Vaux, delivered his 100th victory at Cheltenham in the last race on Wednesday. The other major story of the day was Langer Dan – who became the first horse to win consecutive Coral Cups despite coming into the Festival in horrific form. Shortly after the result, trainer, Dan Skelton, was summoned by the stewards to face questions after a performance at odds with his recent form. There was also a win for Unexpected Party in the Grand Annual in the penultimate race of the day.
