The DVLA has sent an urgent warning to older motorists above the age of 70 with road users at risk of being caught out.
Elderly motorists must renew their driving licence more often when they pass 70 years old compared to younger drivers.
Instead of updating a photocard every 10 years, the law states that this must be swapped every three years as motorists age.
Many road users are likely to be unaware of the change with the DVLA sending a simple reminder to those who may be about to reach the milestone.
Over five million over 70-year-olds still hold a valid driving licence and will also have to follow the rules in 2024.
Posting on social media site X, they wrote: “You need to renew your licence every three years after you turn 70. Do it online now – it’s easy, quick and secure.”

GOV.UK claims new photocards should arrive within one week for those using the online tools.
Renewal applications can also be made through the post but new photocards are likely to take up to three weeks to arrive.
Motorists can keep using their vehicles while their renewal is being considered as long as they match certain criteria.
Road users who continue to get behind the wheel must have the support of their doctor to continue driving.
Motorists must only drive under the conditions of the previous licence while an application must be less than a year old.
The previous licence must not have been revoked or refused for medical reasons and a driver cannot be currently disqualified.
Motorists above 70 only have to renew their photocard licence to stay on the roads and are not required to take any form of test.
Despite this, some motorists’ health could still be a barrier to getting complete free access to Britain’s roads.
Age UK explained: “No, you don’t have to retake your driving test at 70, but you do have to make a health declaration when renewing your licence.
“And if you have a health condition or disability, you may have to have your driving ability assessed.”
