If you’re in the UK, chances are you’re familiar with Aldi, one of the leading supermarket chains in the country. 

But while millions of customers flock to Aldi’s stores each year for their grocery needs, many may not be aware of the story behind the household name.

Aldi, with its distinctive blue and orange logo, has become a fixture in towns and cities across the UK. 

However, few shoppers have stopped to consider the origins of the supermarket’s title, which dates back over a century to its founder.

Aldi traces its roots to the entrepreneurial spirit of Karl Albrecht, who founded the company in 1913.

“Probably the most useful thing I’ve learnt in German this year is that Aldi is short for Albrecht-Discount,” a second said.

A third added: “Never knew ALDI actually stood for something. It stands for Albrecht Discount believe it or not.”

In the years following its founding, Aldi grew rapidly, opening stores across Germany and eventually expanding into other countries, including the UK. 

Today, Aldi is one of the largest and most successful supermarket chains in the world, with thousands of stores serving millions of customers every day.
