Rodrigo Bentancur throws angry tantrum in Tottenham v Man City clash | Football | Sport

Rodrigo Bentancur’s temper boiled over after the Tottenham midfielder was substituted in his side’s Premier League clash with Manchester City, as he kicked his seat in the dugout and threw a bottle in frustration. The Uruguayan lasted just under an hour before being taken off for Dejan Kulusevski, far from happy that his evening was brought to an early end.

Bentancur had already made four fouls and was on a booking when he was sensibly chosen to be substituted off by boss Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs chasing a 1-0 deficit following Erling Haaland’s second-half finish.

But as he made his way off the pitch, Bentancur shook his head on several occasions to let everyone in the stadium know that he wanted to stay on and help turn the game around. He shook Postecoglou’s hand but when he was expected to take a seat with the other substitutes, began kicking the chair and left numerous stud marks, as Bryan Gil watched on with surprise and caution next to the incident.

He then hurled a water bottle, not taking his substitution quietly, also perhaps frustrated that he was unable to prevent City from taking the lead in a crucial match in the visitors’ title charge.

A victory for City away to Spurs would ensure that Pep Guardiola’s side can win the title for the fourth year in a row with another three points at home to West Ham on the final day of the season.

The north London side needed to win against City to keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive, though were aware that doing so would likely hand local rivals Arsenal the title.
