King Charles is unlikely to bring in his nieces to support him and other senior members of the Royal Family with their workload, according to a royal expert.

Despite their titles and their HRH styles, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have never held official royal roles and have mostly joined the Firm to mark special family occasions only.

But with the King and Kate, the Princess of Wales undergoing cancer treatment, and Prince William reducing his engagements to spend more time with his wife and their family, the burden of duties has been shared among the limited number of working royals.

Despite calls to ask Beatrice and Eugenie to lend a hand – a request insiders have claimed the pair would be eager to agree to – expert Rebecca English argued there are two poignant reasons why Charles is unlikely to bring them in.

Ms English said: “Firstly, it’s the problem with their father and any increased royal role for them would almost be seen as a back door way for him to get his foot through that door again to royal duties.

“They have to be consistent in this approach so if they’re saying no to Harry and Meghan they have to say no to Beatrice and Eugenie being more involved in the workings of the Royal Family because straight away you’d have the Sussexes saying, ‘well, if you’re going to do it for them, why won’t you do it for us?'”

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they would be stepping down from their institutional roles, they suggested they would be open to working for the monarchy part-time.

Harry met with his late grandmother, father and brother William at Sandringham in January 2020 to negotiate the terms of his and Meghan’s exit from the Firm.

The trio informed the Duke of Sussex the proposal would not be accepted, prompting the couple to issue a new statement confirming they would no longer represent the Royal Family on official duties.
