Ovingham rescue LATEST: Major search operation after boys seen struggling in river | UK | News


A major rescue operation is underway in Northumberland this evening, after two boys were seen in difficulty in the River Tyne. There is a huge emergency services presence around Ovingham bridge today (May 18) following reports of two people in the water.

Police received a report at around 3.30pm this afternoon that two boys were in difficulty in the water near the bridge.

Northumbria Police, Northumberland Fire and Rescue and the North East Ambulance Service are on the scene.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of concerns of two people in the water in Ovingham at 3.30pm this afternoon (18 May).

“We dispatched our full Hazardous Area Response Team as well as two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and an officer. We also requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. We are currently still on scene.”
