Roses may instantly make you think of a garden full of velvety, dew-covered blooms looking like they often do in a magazine photo.

However, that vision can quickly turn into frustration when the roses you’re trying to grow don’t quite live up to the ideal.

It may just be because gardeners are making a few simple rose care errors when caring for their flowers.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, gardening expert Nastya Vasylchyshyna at Plantum, the app that helps identify plants and improve plant care, has shared one particular mistake that can result in your plant not producing blooms.

The expert claimed that many gardeners fall victim to planting their roses in an “unsuitable spot”. 

Nastya explained: “Roses need five to six hours of direct sunlight to grow and bloom profusely. 

“Western or eastern exposure works best, as the bright afternoon sunlight can scorch leaves and flower petals.”

While some species tolerate partial shade, such as growing under a tree canopy, a lack of light “will result in scarce blooming and stunted growth”.

She instated that gardener need to make sure to “avoid open places” as stand winds may “damage or break the plant”. 

Before planting, add some compost to the planting hole to amend the soil with organic matter and make it more fertile and loose. Roses can’t grow in poor, waterlogged, or heavy substrates.

Nastya also shared another mistake that can “damage” the plant, and that’s shallow watering.

Roses “need abundant watering” to develop a deep and strong root system. Giving the plant a small drink frequently will only moisten the top layers of the soil, resulting in the bush growing a shallow root system. 

Such plants are more susceptible to unfavourable growing conditions. Therefore, ensure your roses receive an ample drink and allow the soil to dry between watering sessions.

When purchasing roses for your garden, it is best to choose the rose species based on your climate as choosing an unsuitable species can be a mistake.
