The court also heard that Norlaila fled Australia and was “desperately seeking refuge” in her home country of Malaysia but she continued to feel “overwhelming distress”. Norlaila provided her own victim impact statement, read out by her daughter and Kyrgios’ sister Halimah.

She said she was “confronted by a masked figure with cold eyes”, leaving her “shocked to the core”. The statement also said: “What was stolen from me that day was far more than a vehicle. It was my sense of safety, my peace, my ability to feel safe in my own home.”

The offender, who has been in custody since the incident, apologied and acknowledged the “seriousness” of his actions in his own statement read to the court. He was remanded in custody and is expected to be sentenced in July.
