Buckingham Palace has shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse video of Sir Keir Starmer arriving to meet with King Charles before being appointed the UK’s new Prime Minister.
While their actual meeting could not be filmed, the clip shows the Labour leader arriving at the Palace and shaking hands with the King before sitting down across from him following his landslide election win.
The two men exchanged a few words as His Majesty welcomed his new Prime Minister, the third so far of his less than two-year reign.
The King refers to Sir Keir being up all night as the election results came in, saying: “You must be utterly exhausted. and on your knees, anyway, you are here.”
He then adds: “You’ll have to get to grip with everything straight away”, to which the Prime Minister replies: “A quick change over” and the King responds: “To say the least.”
His Majesty then continued: “Having to get to grips with everything straight away.. must be exhausting.”
Earlier today Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The King received in Audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration.
“Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
Upon arrival at the Palace around noon, Sir Keir and his wife Victoria were driven through the North Centre Gate and across the Forecourt, into the Quadrangle.
The Stamers were greeted at The King’s Door by Sir Clive Alderton, Principal Private Secretary to The King and Queen, and Commander William Thornton, Royal Navy, Equerry to The King.
During their private audience the King invited Sir Keir to form a new government during a meeting in the Audience Room, which he accepted.
As is custom, at the end of their meeting Lady Victoria Starmer was presented to the King as she and her husband prepare to move into No. 10 Downing Street.
