Tesco issues warning to those buying cheese

When it comes to preserving food for longer Brits would go to extreme lengths to ensure we save a few pounds.

As the UK is going through a cost of living crisis, bills are soaring through the roof. It is no wonder we are looking for tips and tricks to ensure we waste less not only when it comes to money but also food.

However, the supermarket giant has come to the rescue. They have issued a warning to its customers who are buying cheese.

In a bid to save money, the supermarket’s website has suggested freezing cheese. Not only are freezers the most efficient when they are full but you can make the most of compartment space to prevent food from going to waste.

According to its website, Tesco suggests hard cheeses like Cheddar, Red Leicester or Comté all freeze well if you are clearing out the fridge.

Cheese is not only a pricey product to buy in the supermarkets but this will do wonders if you thought of throwing it away.

So, all you have to do is freeze grated cheese in an airtight Tupperware as this makes it easier to use handfuls as and when you need it.

Tesco suggested adding the cheese to an “indulgent macaroni cheese” or melting it into a delicious “cheesy dip”.

Thankfully, cheese is a versatile food so can be enjoyed in most starters, mains or desserts. But we can’t help that this nifty trick will save us so much money in the future.

Tesco also shared a few freezer basic tips to remember before you start filling it up:

  • Food should always be room temperature before freezing. If it’s hot when you put it in, the rest of the freezer will start to defrost.
  • Label everything with the date you froze it and what it is, for easy recognition later.
  • Food will expand once frozen, so don’t fill containers right to the top.
  • Always defrost food in the fridge, not at room temperature.
