Your Echo speaker gets useful free upgrade with new things to ask Alexa

If you are struggling to understand what your children are saying then your Echo might now be able to help. Amazon has just released a useful Alexa update which is aimed at helping users keep up to speed with the latest Gen Z lingo. From today you’ll be able to ask your Echo speaker, “Alexa, talk Gen Z to me” with the chatty assistant then revealing the 20 most popular Gen Z phrases.

It might be a good time to learn with research from the online retailer suggesting that 35 percent of Gen Z’ers claim they cringe when someone from an older generation uses slang incorrectly.

Stats also show that 83% percent of Gen Z’ers say that older generations often fail to understand their slang, and over half of the older generation have confirmed that they’d welcome assistance on understanding Gen Z terminology.

“Alexa is ready to help with answers to everything, including keeping up to date with the very latest lingo.” said Meryem Tom, Amazon Alexa’s UK Country Manager. “Our research shows that there’s plenty of Brits out there who can’t quite keep up with Gen Z’s jargon and we hope that Alexa’s new feature will be a reliable source of knowledge for those who want to brush up on their Gen Z vocabulary.”

The UK’s top 20 Gen Z terms according to Amazon’s research can be found below – all of which are featured in Alexa’s latest update:

Lowkey • It’s Giving • Ick • Slay • Rizz • The math is matching • Tea

Lives rent-free in my head • Mid • Sus • Ate • Hot Girl Summer • Cap

Slaps • Fam • Lit • Drip • Airing • In your XXX era • Mother

News of this Alexa boost comes as Amazon recently revealed that it is reviving its little Echo Spot speaker and this time it’s a bit less creepy. The previous Spot model – which was discontinued back in 2019 – featured a tiny camera which didn’t go down too well with users wanting to pop it on their bedside tables. This fully rebooted Spot has ditched that live-action video function with it now getting a bigger circular display and improved front-firing directional speaker. That should help users see what’s on the screen and get a much better audio experience as well.

It comes in three different colours – Black, Glacier White, or Ocean Blue – and costs a pretty hefty £79.99.
