Hairdresser shares ‘chic and elegant’ style for women over 50

Long locks have grown in popularity among some of Hollywood’s silver-stranded leading ladies, including Meryl Streep, Andie MacDowell and Diane Keaton.

Despite the age-old belief that it’s best to go for the chop in later years, celebrity hairstylist Jason Collier has debunked the myth and dished out tips for rocking long hair at any stage of life.

Jason, who is a hair expert and brand educator for Jerome Russell Bblonde, claimed: “There is a misconception that long hair in middle age can be ageing, and sadly many women feel pressure to chop their tresses.

“However, this is just not necessary. Flowing locks can look chic, elegant and youthful at any age, it’s all down to the cut.”

He continued: “Long hair looks great on a wide range of ages – and works particularly well on those with medium or thick locks.”

The best hairstyle for women over 50

As for what to ask for in a salon, Jason suggested experimenting with layers. He said: “To achieve the best look, request plenty of layers when you visit your stylist; they add volume, especially around the face, creating a softness and movement that is incredibly flattering.”

One thing to avoid when styling long hair is a “super straight, one-length cut”, as Jason noted that can look harsh, and “could potentially age you”.

Texture is another thing to consider when it comes to hair, especially for mature women who may experience hormonal changes during and after menopause. Jason claimed that such changes can lead to weakened hair, that’s more likely to break and split.

Jason added: “Absolutely keep your long hair into your 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond, but do keep in mind that it will need a little extra TLC. You will need extra products to care for your tresses and may need to take an extra 10 minutes for styling.”

To cheat the appearance of thick and luscious locks, there are a few styles Jason suggests for mature women, mermaid waves being one.

He said: “Mermaid waves have a uniform movement in an S-shape, and add beautiful movement to long hair.”

A bouncy blow-dry is another great option, as this style creates a soft, smooth, shiny shape that “exudes youthfulness”.

For those who like to wear their hair scraped back, the hair expert suggested swapping sleek styles for those that are more relaxed.

Jason explained: “For an easy, everyday look, try a messy updo. Add texture to your hair with a flat iron, pop it up in a loose ponytail in the middle of your head, and make sure to leave face-framing pieces as these create the illusion of lifted cheekbones.”

Women who prefer to style their hair with a fringe can opt for a “statement” style. A block or curtain fringe accentuates the cheekbones and hides fine lines on the forehead.

The hair stylist added: “Opt for wispy bangs reaching your eyebrows or soft side waves.”
