A soldier let out bloodcurdling screams in a knife attack outside an army barracks in Kent, a witness has said.

The man, who lives near to the scene in Sally Port Gardens in Gillingham, said he heard screams on Tuesday evening (July 23) before rushing outside to see the victim lying on the floor in uniform.

Alex Reynolds said: “I came out on the street, went over to the corner. It was a minute and a half after the incident, there were already 10 people around the body. The body was lying there and not moving.”

The 38-year-old said the man was in a “cream camouflage” military uniform. He said others at the scene said they saw the attacker “speed away” on a motorbike and told of someone trying to chase him in a car.

The British Army said the victim, who is in his 40s, is fighting for his life after he suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
