Stains are hard to clean in many places around the kitchen – one of which is cups and mugs caused by tea and coffee.

Tea and coffee contain something called tannins which are responsible for the brown stains left in your mugs.

Tannins are what give these hot drinks their distinctive, slightly bitter flavour. Mostly, tannin stains are not an issue, they’re just unsightly.

However, depending on your dishware and the length of time the stain has been there, they can be tricky to remove.

Tannin stains show up and remain longer on white or light-coloured ceramic cups.

If you’re an avid guzzler of hot drinks, this might leave you tearing your hair out wondering just how to remove tea and coffee stains from mugs.

Having tested out a method they read about on the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one woman was amazed by the results.

Jacqueline Parsons wrote: “Badly tea stained cup. I saw on here a few weeks ago that mould and mildew remover will remove tea-stained cups instantly.

“Thought I’d try it, I sprayed it into the cup and washed it out 20 seconds later. I was amazed. It worked like magic. I love this stuff.”

Jacqueline also shared before and after pictures of the cleaning process and the result made the cup look new.

After seeing this post another cleaning enthusiast put this tip to the test and found success. Rebecca Frazer wrote: “I’ve just done this on my Hubby’s cup! Thank you! It’s come up like new.”

Mrs Hinch fans also gave other suggestions like using a magic sponge, soda crystals and Milton sterilising fluid.

Linda Donald said: “Damp magic sponge cleans it perfectly and you don’t need no chemicals.”

Sarina Caravelle wrote: “I use half a teaspoon of soda crystals, pour hot water on, five minutes later, wipe and rinse.”

Leah Trevorrow commented: “Milton is also amazing at doing this. Mine went in seconds. So good. I used it on my partner’s work mugs.”
