Tom Daley has sparked a reaction after being seen knitting in the crowd at the 2024 Paris Olympics Games. The 30-year-old has been in the aquatics centre on Saturday morning for one of the first gold medal events, the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final.
But it wasn’t just the action he was focused on, with the television cameras frequently panning to him as he embraced one of his favourite hobbies.
Daley, who himself is competing in his final summer Games, even finished a jumper during the action, with his surname expertly inserted on the back.
But fans of the four-time Olympic medalist wouldn’t have been surprised by the footage. During the delayed 2020 Tokyo Games, Daley knitted in the crowd as he supported his team-mates, and eventually left Japan with first gold after prevailing in the 10m synchronised platform event with Matty Lee.
And in an interview with Prima, he lated joked: “If somebody had told me that I would probably be most remembered from the Tokyo Olympics for knitting, rather than winning an Olympic gold medal, I probably would have laughed.”
Daley then created his own knitting brand, Made with Love, and explained what inspired his initiative. “The name Made With Love came from the very first thing I made,” he said.
“Which was a scarf which I made for my mum for Mother’s Day, and I wanted to sew something into it so that she could remember that I made it for her. So then Made with Love by Tom Daley was born off these tags.”
Daley has since expressed his belief that his hobby can help with ‘mindfulness’ for all people. And he’s said the pastime should also be practiced in schools.
