Grout is the space between tiles that can quickly become brown with grime or black with mould if it is not cleaned properly.
Many people do not want to spend hours having to wash their walls or floor tiles, so luckily there is a much quicker and easier way to get rid of grout stains and mould.
Erin, a cleaning expert and founder of Lemons, Lavender and Laundry, has shared that the best way to whiten grout is by making a homemade natural solution out of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
She said: “I have made a lot of cleaning recipes over the years, and I can honestly say this DIY Grout Cleaner is one of my favourites.
“The results are truly incredible! I am not kidding when I say it works like magic. My grout went from dirty brown to ‘like new’ status with just a little scrubbing.”
Baking soda is mildly abrasive and alkaline which means it can help remove dirt, grease or grime trapped in the porous surface of grout without damaging it.
Erin said: “Baking soda has the ability to pull dirt and grime out of so many surfaces.”
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent which helps to whiten and brighten the grout while also being able to remove mould or other organic matter.
Erin added: “The wonderful thing about hydrogen peroxide is it not only works with the baking soda to clean grout, it is also a disinfectant.”
How to clean tile grout with a homemade solution
You will need:
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Bowl
- Toothbrush
- Sponge
Method
To begin, add half a cup of baking soda to a bowl but add more if you are cleaning a large surface such as a bathroom wall.
Erin said: “Remember, you can always make more grout cleaner if you run out, so go with a smaller amount to start.”
Next, slowly begin stirring a little hydrogen peroxide at a time until you have a paste-like consistency. If you feel like you have added too much then just stir in a little more baking soda.
Erin said: “In the end, you want a consistency that will sit on the toothbrush like soft toothpaste, and not run off.”
Once you have made the homemade solution, scoop a little onto a toothbrush and begin scrubbing the grout and you should see a change in the colour almost immediately.
After scrubbing a section of the tile grout, rinse it with a wet sponge to remove any baking soda residue, and continue to repeat this process until the grout is clean.
This simple homemade solution will not only wipe away grout mould and stains naturally but is much more effective than using bleach or any harsh chemicals so that you have a sparkling clean floor or wall in no time.
Erin said: “Do not use bleach to clean grout. Bleach can damage and discolour both grout and tile over time.”
