UK hot weather: Britain braces for hottest day of the year | UK | News

A tropical storm that threatens to unleash half a years’ worth of rain on Florida could result in the hottest day of the year so far next week.

Tropical Storm Debby, which will not reach British shores, could lead to temperatures as high as 32C in some places, according to the Met Office.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Nick Silkstone said: “While Debby itself won’t reach the UK, the system and its remnants does play a role in the UK forecast next week, but chiefly as background influence on the shape and strength of the jet stream, which often plays a significant role in the weather we experience in the UK.

While the weather for the rest of the week will be unaffected, the impact of the storm on the jet stream will begin to be felt from Saturday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Dan Suri, added: “Tropical Storm Debby in North America is helping to strengthen the jet stream, and is causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air to move into the UK later this weekend, and early next week.

“Temperatures are likely to reach the low 30C in places, notably in the south and southeast. Further north and west within this warm air, outbreaks of heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible. As well as the hot daytime temperatures, a very warm night is also expected on Sunday night into Monday”.

Tropical Storm Debby made landfall in northern Florida on Monday as a hurricane with at least five people being known to have died as a result.

Julian Heming is a tropical cyclone expert at the Met Office and has been tracking Debby’s progress. He said: “Tropical Storm Debby is likely to bring significant impacts to eastern parts of the United States.

“Moist air from the subtropical Atlantic is being drawn northwards by the storm and current forecasts suggest 200-400mm of rain will fall quite widely in the area, with parts of the Carolinas possibly seeing as much as 600mm of rain in the coming 3-5 days.”

Friday:

Rain in the south clearing during the morning and becoming mostly dry across the south. Further north showers with some brighter spells. Feeling warm in the sunshine.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Sunshine for many, though blustery showers in the north. Patchy showery rain on Saturday. Hot sunshine on Sunday and Monday, but rain in the northwest.
