Heron Foods, a supermarket popular around the Liverpool area, has urged customers to return a children’s treat because of a contamination risk.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: “Heron Foods is recalling The Smileys Surprise Egg because it contains hazelnuts (nuts) which are not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to hazelnuts (nuts).”

The FSA added: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to hazelnuts (nuts), do not eat it.

“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”

Symptoms of a food allergy reaction, as listed by the NHS include:

• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
• Itchy skin or a raised rash
• Swelling of the lips, face and eyes
• Coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, noisy breathing or a hoarse voice
• Sneezing or an itchy, runny or blocked nose
• Feeling sick or being sick
• Tummy pain
• Diarrhoea

The NHS added: “You may get symptoms straight after eating the food you’re allergic to, or days later.” A mild allergy can be treated with antihistamines, but a severe reaction could need “emergency” medication, such as an EpiPen.

Any trouble breathing, or swelling on the lips, mouth, throat or tongue, is an emergency and 999 should be called.

Additional signs you need to call 999 include:

• Turning blue
• A child is limp, floppy or not responding.

Elsewhere, Irish multinational retail chain Dunes Stores has recalled Italian Tomato and Basil Sauce.

The Italian Tomato and Basil Sauce has been contaminated with milk, which has not been shared on the food label.

The FSA said the sauce is a “possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents”.

Popular supermarket Asda has also recalled Al’Fez Natural Tahini because it’s been contaminated with salmonella.

Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
