Eggs are a fantastic breakfast choice, and many often opt for the fried variety.
It might seem straightforward to fry an egg, but many crank up the heat too high, ending up with a charred mess glued to the pan and a disappointingly rubbery yolk.
But ChihYu Chiang, culinary whizz and founder of I Heart Umami, has let readers in on a simple and healthier recipe for nailing that fried egg and you can ditch the frying pan altogether to cook them.
She explained: “Making fried egg in air fryer is a fast and easy alternative to stovetop cooking. Crispy fried eggs with creamy yokes are ready in minutes, with minimal cleanup.
“Eggs in air fryer use a fraction of the oil, which saves on fat and calories for a healthy protein addition to any meal.”
Using an air fryer for your eggs ensures a more uniform cook, giving you a tastier egg with a richer and creamier texture.
ChihYu went on to say: “These air-fried eggs couldn’t be simpler, and they are perfect every time: crispy on the outside, with a creamy, runny yoke inside.”
Just spray a shallow and heat-proof tray with oil (or grease with butter), pop the empty tray into the air fryer at 200C, and let it preheat for five minutes.
Crack an egg into a small dish, and when ready, gently tip it onto the sizzling tray. Pop the tray into the air fryer at 180C for a few minutes, depending on your preference for how runny you want the yolk.
For those who don’t have a tray that will fit in the air fryer, they can use foil instead. Fold the foil into a small cup shape that’s relatively flat at the bottom. Make sure the sides are high enough to prevent spilling.
Grease the foil and add and cook the egg. You should never cover the entire bottom of the air fryer with foil, as it can restrict airflow.
ChihYu advised: “Air fry for three minutes for a sunny side up or over-easy egg. If you prefer a medium egg yolk, add one minute to the cooking time.”
Once done, retrieve the tray from the air fryer, slide a spatula under the egg to lift it free, and there you have a perfectly creamy fried egg to devour.
These air fry sunny-side-up eggs are an ideal addition to any classic breakfast like avocado on toast.
