Meghan, who discovered she is 43 per cent Nigerian after doing a DNA test, spoke fondly of the historic north Colombian village of San Basilio de Palenque, which was founded by escaped slaves in the 17th century and became the Americas’ first ‘free town’ for Africans.

She said of the village: “We understand very well the importance and the meaning of what this town is, has been left to us very light.

“We understand what Palenque represents for Colombia and for the world, we thank you for sharing with us everything you have shown us.”

Speaking about the village, Harry said: “What we are seeing here is everything that a community is, do not forget the Vice President’s message, they are stronger together, they are stronger united as one.”

A spokesperson for the vice-president’s office said: “It was a special meeting to reconnect with the roots African; know the experiences and living conditions of the people blacks, afro-descendants, raizales and palanqueros in the region and strengthen human and cultural development programs that promote guarantee of cultural and collective rights in this territory.”
