A wine expert has given an honest review of Idris Elba’s Champagne – which costs £99 for a bottle.

Tom Gilbey has more than 150,000 followers on TikTok, where he shares videos reviewing all sorts of wine – from cheap Aldi bottles to the really expensive stuff. And he recently managed to get his hands on a bottle of Elba’s Champagne Porte Noire Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.

For a bottle of bubbly to be labelled “Grand Cru”, all of the grapes used must come from one of the 17 Grand Cru villages in the Champagne region of France. Tom said Idris’ came from the village of Avize.

Explaining the difference between this and regular Champagne, Tom said: “Grand Cru Champagne should have a bit more weight, and a bit more elegance, and a bit more finesse than normal Champagne.”

Tom said he got scents of “brioche” after giving Elba’s Champagne a sniff. He added: “I absolutely love that!”

And he was amazed after taking a sip. Tom gushed: “Holy s**t! Idris, that is almost as delicious as you. That is a beautiful Grand Cru Champagne. Absolutely bleeding.”

In the caption of the video, Tom added that the Champagne “sort of should be at £99 a pop”. He also confirmed he wasn’t paid for the review.

Tom’s video has been viewed more than 30,000 times and racked up thousands of likes. Reacting in the comments section, one follower said: “Idris makes Champagne?!?? Just when you think a man can’t be any more perfect.”

Another wrote: “Love how you do these. Great content and great great knowledge. Also very funny.” A third said: “Your videos literally keep me going through life.”
