Remove grease and grime from stove with 65p ‘magical paste’

Cleaning your stove can often feel like a rather daunting task with grease, food splatters, and stubborn grime accumulating on the stovetop.

While you may be tempted to opt for a commercial cleaner, these can become rather expensive if you’re using them regularly, and they tend to be laden with harsh chemicals.

Instead, experts at Lottomart have thought up an effective and affordable DIY stove cleaning method using common household ingredients.

Their homemade solution is made up of four readily available components: baking soda, white vinegar, liquid dish soap, and water.

They state that with the amounts used of each of these ingredients, the total amount spent on creating this solution comes to about 65p.

  • Baking Soda: Approximately 80p to £1.50 for a 500g box. For this recipe, you’ll use about 20p worth.
  • White Vinegar: Around £1 to £2 per litre, costing about 5p for the required amount.
  • Liquid Dish Soap: Between £1 and £3 for a 500ml bottle, with approximately 10p used in this solution.
  • Optional Addition: A few drops of essential oils like lemon or tea tree can be included for a refreshing scent and additional antibacterial properties. A small bottle costs around £3 to £8, with just 30p worth needed for this recipe.

To prepare the cleaning paste you should mix half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of water in a bowl, creating a thick consistency.

Then stir in a tablespoon of liquid dish soap until the mixture is evenly combined, and if you prefer a fragrant cleaner, then just add in five to 10 drops of your favourite essential oil.

To apply the paste, spread it generously over the surface of the stove, focusing on areas with heavy grease or burnt-on food.

Following this, pour a quarter cup of white vinegar into a spray bottle and lightly mist it over the applied paste, the reaction with the baking soda in the paste will create a gentle fizz, helping to remove stubborn grime.

Then let the solution sit for 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the ingredients to effectively break down tough stains.

Using a sponge or soft cloth, gently scrub the stove in circular motions. The abrasive nature of the baking soda will assist in removing any remaining dirt without scratching the surface.

Finally, dampen a clean cloth with water to wipe away the paste and loosen the grime. For a streak-free finish, dry the surface with another clean, dry cloth.
