Two years ago Jim Carrey reprised the villainous Doctor Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

However, following the film’s release, the star confessed he might be retiring from acting, much to fans’ horror.

Nevertheless, he has returned as Eggman for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which gets its first epic trailer today.

Keanu Reeves joins the cast as the seemingly invincible Shadow the Hedgehog and it looks like Sonic and the gang will need to team up with their old adversary to defeat him.

But that wasn’t the only surprise in the teaser as it turns out that Carrey is playing two roles in the movie.

At the end of the trailer, Carrey is reunited with his father, who looks like an older version of Eggman. There’s a twinkle of his Count Olaf in there for sure!

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits UK cinemas this Christmas.
