I made Mary Berry’s sausage and potato hotpot – it took 8 minutes to prep


Bangers and mash is a classic hearty dish that will warm you up after a long day, but most of us do not want to spend ages cooking over the stove after being at work.

Luckily, Mary Berry has created a sausage and potato traybake alternative that will hit the spot if you are craving something tasty for dinner that requires little effort to make.

I decided to make this recipe on a weekday night as I wanted something fuss-free that could slowly cook away in the oven while I was busy doing other things.

It only took me roughly eight minutes to prepare this dish as all I had to do was peel and chop the vegetables, place everything in a dish and then put it in the oven.

This dinner was worth trying as it tasted incredible, and I recommend making it for anyone who wants something quick on a weekday night but is still delicious and homecooked.

How to make Mary Berry’s sausage and potato traybake

You will need:

  • Six sausages
  • 500g of baby new potatoes
  • Two garlic bulbs
  • Two red peppers
  • Two white onions
  • 200ml of white wine (optional)
  • Chicken stock (optional)
  • Thyme
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil

If you are cooking this for children or simply do not want to add wine then you can also make this dish with gravy. You can add both stock and wine to this dish, but note it will take longer to cook in the oven.

I bought the ingredients from Aldi and everything together cost me £8.85, with the most expensive ingredient being the sausages which cost me £2.49.

Method

To make this dish, I first preheated the oven to 200C.

Next, I deseeded the red peppers and then peeled the onions and garlic. I chopped up all the vegetables and then placed them in a mixing bowl.

I halved the baby potatoes and placed them in the bowl. I then pierced the sausages with a fork and then added them to the bowl as well.

I then poured two teaspoons of olive oil into the bowl and mixed everything together with a wooden spoon until all the ingredients were fully coasted.

All I needed to do then was season the ingredients with thyme, toss everything into a roasting tin and then put the sausages on top of everything so that no vegetables were covering them.

I left the dish to slowly cook in the oven for 35 minutes. Once the time was up, I turned the sausages over and then added both chicken gravy and white wine to the dish.

It took around 30 more minutes for the dish to become crispy. If using both gravy and white wine, it will take a little longer to cook.

I then took it out of the oven, mixed the sausages into the vegetables and placed it in a bowl. It was a hearty dish and the tender vegetables and potatoes were absolutely delicious.

I think this would be the perfect dinner on a rainy day to warm you up or when you are craving some comfort food without having to spend lots of time or money on a recipe.
