With trends coming and going quickly, it can be hard to know whether making an investment in a full kitchen renovation is worth it.

More people than ever are deciding to update their current space rather than renovate it, which also makes it easier to change in the future if you wish.

Tobie Lewis, a paint and interiors expert from Valspar Paint, exclusively shared some top tips when it comes to updating the kitchen.

1. Paint the worktops

The expert told Express.co.uk: “Rather than splashing out the cash on brand new worktops, which can cost up to £10,000, spruce them up with a splash of paint instead. The majority of worktops can be painted, however, it’s important you get the right paint for the worktop to avoid any damage.”

He added: “This would normally need to be completely sanded then painted, then a clear lacquer on top. It’s a longer job but it can definitely save lots of money.”

2. Give your cupboards a glow up

Cupboards can easily be painted after being taken off the hinges and sanded down. The expert recommended fresh, white kitchen units as they have the ability to brighten up any space, regardless of whether it is super modern or classic and traditional.

3. Add a backsplash

The interior pro said: “When thinking about wall space, people will automatically think of a new colour. However, you can also add new life to your wall space by creating a backsplash. Whether you want the backsplash to take up an entire wall, or just cover up a small space, it can be done for less than you might think.”

According to the expert, stick-on tiles are easy to apply and can be purchased for as little as £18.

4. Give the lighting a glow up

Changing up your lighting anywhere in the home can completely transform the look of a room, which includes both artificial and natural lighting.

Tobie noted: “Whether you change out the bulbs, add some lamps and candles, or even remove old drapes to allow in more natural light, even the smallest changes can have an impact.”

5. Brighten the outside in with greenery

“Easy and quick, adding greenery to any room can instantly elevate it,” explained the expert.

For those who don’t have much time, opt for low-maintenance plants such as a snake plant, which usually thrives in the bathroom.

For an even better budget-friendly option, you could always pick some fresh flowers from your garden and display them in a vase.

6. Decorative door handles

The expert continued: “While it may seem like a small change, adding a new set of doorknobs or cupboard handles can make a big difference to worn-out doors and cabinets in an instant.

“Look for unusually shaped handles such as Bobbin handles, brass handles, and copper handles for an on-trend update to your home.

“Pay attention to the small details shows a level of care that will impress your guests instantly. A new handle can cost as little as £2, or spray paint your current handles for a cost-effective refresh.”
