Gardening expert shares how to repair and ‘thicken up’ lawns before autumn

The heat of the summer season can leave lawns looking thinner and tired.

The process of over-seeding is nice and easy and by doing it now we can repair and thicken up the lawn well before the days become cooler and shorter.

We can over-seed thin patches in the lawn or the whole lawn, the process of over-seeding is the same.

We take the mini handheld spreader filled with grass seed and gently sprinkle grass seed across the established lawn, the grass seed will fall between the established grass and settle ready to germinate.

We then quilt it with lawn dressing or topsoil to cover the grass seeds.

We then quilt it with lawn dressing or topsoil to cover the grass seeds. I prefer to use lawn dressing as it efficiently pushes grass seed through the established grass and onto the ground.

This ensures more of the grass seed germinates and thickens the lawn up quicker. The grass seeds will germinate within seven to 10 days during warmer weather.

The lawn will need to be watered every few days to ensure the grass seed doesn’t lay on dry ground.

The new grasslings will be visible amongst the established grass and give it a brighter and lusher look.
