Storage method keeps carrots and celery fresh


Storing carrots and celery in a particular way could help them stay fresh for weeks.

These foods are essential to many meals – from soups to bolognese sauce, they pack tonnes of flavour and give dishes a nutritional boost.

But if they’re not kept properly, these vegetables can quickly turn soft and soggy. If you’re cooking for just one or two people, this can be particularly frustrating as you might not be able to use up all of your vegetables before they lose their crunch and taste.

Luckily, TikToker Davina Cohan – known as @wellnesswithdavina on the social media platform – has shared a clever way to keep your veggies fresh for much longer. “This is the best way to store your celery and carrots and make sure they’re always fresh and crunchy,” she said.

“Cut them up however you’d like and put them in a container of water. Set the container in the fridge and they’ll stay crunchy for weeks.”

She captioned the clip: “Because no one likes a soft carrot,” followed by a carrot emoji. Meanwhile, one grateful fan responded: “Thank you so much.”

It comes after we revealed how to stop potatoes from sprouting by keeping them next to a fruit. In a TikTok posted by @lifetips669, it was revealed: “Potatoes and apples are good friends. Storing them together prevents sprouting.”

And there’s science to support the technique. According to Tasting Table, apples produce ethylene, a natural gas exposure which “can slow down or halt potatoes’ sprouting process”.

The website also recommends avoiding storing potatoes in a warm environment, instead keeping them somewhere “cool, dry and dark”. However, you should not store them in the fridge as the cold can “trigger the potato’s starches to transform into sugars, which can become carcinogenic when cooked”.

You should also be careful which other vegetables you store next to apples. The ethylene can have the opposite effect on the likes of onions, melons, broccoli, and peaches. Their high sensitivity to the chemical can speed up their ripening process and make them go bad quicker.
