Everyone is aware that it’s essential to refrigerate items like meat and dairy to ensure they remain fresh and safe to consume. However, the storage of other items can often be a point of contention, with debates about where they should be kept.
Food experts have now shed light on some common breakfast foods that you might be storing incorrectly – leading them to spoil faster and resulting in wasted money.
Catering professionals at Alliance Online have compiled a list of foods that are frequently stored in the wrong place, including several items typically consumed at breakfast.
By altering how you store these items, you should be able to keep them fresher for longer and reduce the need for frequent repurchases.
Here’s the complete list, as per the experts’ advice, the Daily Record reports.
Breakfast foods to keep in the fridge
Eggs
The Food Standards Agency advises that eggs should be refrigerated to protect against salmonella and maintain optimal taste and quality.
Butter
While many people choose to leave butter out for easier spreading, it can only stay at room temperature for around two weeks. It’s best to leave out only a small quantity at a time and store the rest in the fridge to preserve its quality.
Jam and marmalade
Despite many people not bothering to refrigerate jam and marmalade, most product labels recommend chilling them once opened. To prevent mould or unpleasant smells, store them in the fridge after opening.
Pure maple syrup
Pure maple syrup is prone to spoilage over time, hence to avoid mould formation, it’s recommended to refrigerate it post-opening. If left at room temperature, mould may appear on its surface.
Lemons, oranges and limes
Storing lemons, oranges and limes in the fridge can extend their shelf life up to four times longer as the cooler temperature prevents them from drying out.
Alliance Online advises always scrutinising food labels for storage suggestions. If your food appears or smells off, it’s best to discard it.
Eating tainted food could result in food poisoning.
