Basic manoeuvre causes 21,300 crashes and all drivers use it

Another manoeuvre that Ovoko urged needs a great deal of caution is slowing down or coming to a stop in the road, with an average of 15,641 vehicles crashing because of it.

Naturally, there are plenty of reasons why a driver would need to stop, including traffic jams, busy junctions or lower speed limits.

However, to avoid putting other themselves and other road users at risk, it is vital that drivers look in their mirrors to see if a vehicle is close behind and avoid harsh braking.

Finally, Ovoko recommended that drivers take a great deal of care when they are waiting to move off at a junction, with more than 12,400 drivers crashing at junctions each year.

Again, this is a particularly common scenario for drivers, meaning that many do not take it as seriously as they should and are more likely to take risks.

Nevertheless, drivers should only move off from a junction when it is clear, checking both directions twice to make sure they have spotted any thinner vehicles, including bikes and horses.
