If you are frequently tearing your hair out at the sluggish Wi-Fi speeds in your home you might be looking for an upgrade, and EE thinks it has found the solution. The UK network provider, owned by BT, has fully unveiled a brand new Wi-Fi router that claims to unlock the best possible broadband speeds.
The firm already offers zippy 1.6Gbps fibre broadband speeds across many parts of the UK, but only certain postcodes have access, and these packages are the most expensive. To try and bring a broadband boost to as many homes as possible, EE has announced a brand new Wi-Fi router that uses cutting-edge technology that promises better speeds.
The EE Smart Hub Pro router has Wi-Fi 7, the latest version of everyone’s favourite wireless tech. EE says it will bring “faster speeds and a more consistent connection” to the internet in UK homes, and the firm will only charge a maximum of £10 for the device – but not everyone is able to get their hands on one.
Express.co.uk exclusively revealed the design of this modern-looking router back in February but now it’s only a matter of days before you can get your hands on one.
From 17th September, new and existing EE customers on the firm’s Busiest Home Bunde or Made for Gamers tariffs can claim the router for free, though these can cost up to £79.99 per month. Otherwise, you’ll need to be on an EE Full Fibre 150 plan or faster (the number corresponds to the speed of the plan), which start at £33.99 at the time of writing.
Anyone on these plans can get the new Smart Hub Pro for an additional £10 per month. That extra cash should see you getting faster speeds as Wi-Fi 7 can handle having more devices connected than older Wi-Fi tech. This price also includes one Smart Wi-Fi Pro extender that can push the better speeds to all corners of your home – and EE will send you up to four if you need them.
But to get the fastest possible connection you’ll need devices that are also Wi-Fi 7 compatible, which is only on the latest smartphones such as the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series as well as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
“Wi-Fi 7 for the home is another first for EE customers, giving households higher speeds and better capacity to support devices in every corner of their home,” said EE CEO Marc Allera.
EE also launched a brand new mobile network today, but only in 15 cities across the UK. Known as a 5G Standalone network, the new airwaves are claimed to give better outdoor phone signal to EE customers in Bath, Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield.
But to get the improved coverage you’ll have to upgrade your SIM card to one that supports the new tech, and prices start at £43 per month for an All Rounder SIM only plan. This plan includes unlimited mobile data, EU roaming, inclusive smartwatch data, and EE Network Boost, which gets you to the front of the queue for better speeds in areas such as stadiums and at festivals when everyone is trying to use the mobile network and things can slow down.
