Avocados stay fresh for weeks if you store them like this

Foodies love avocados. After all, they’re tasty on toast in salads or paired with delicious treats like smoked salmon. But keeping them fresh can be tough as they tend to go off pretty quickly.

Luckily for us, there’s no need to worry, as a woman has recently shared a hack to lengthen their shelf-life. According to creatorsmakingmoney on TikTok, all you need is one thing, and it helps to store them “for weeks”.

She started by giving them a vinegar bath and then she gives them a good scrub. After this, she removes the stickers, and pops them into a container.

Then she fills the container with water until all the avocadoes are covered. If you pop a lid on top, and put it in the fridge, she said this will help to keep your avocados fresher for longer.

Since the video was shared, it’s been liked hundreds of times, and people think the trick is pretty amazing. Though peoople did have some questions about the vinegar bath.

One person said: “How long do you do the vinegar bath?” Another wrote: “What is a vinegar bath? Water and vinegar or just vinegar?”

A third added: “Ty. Doing this now.” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “What’s the container called?”

Some people didn’t seem all that convinced with the idea though. This is because they didn’t understand why they’d need to wash the avocados.

One person said: “Do they not get soggy?” Another queried: “What’s the point of washing them. You’re not eating the outside.”

A third asked: “Do you put them in ripe or hard?” One more also wrote: “Did this and they all went hard/inedible.”

Ways to keep avocados fresh

Keeping avocados fresh can be a bit tricky, especially once they’ve been cut. Here are some tips to help you maximize their shelf life:

Unripe Avocados

  1. Room Temperature: Store unripe avocados at room temperature. They will ripen in a few days to a week. Ripening can be hastened by placing them in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana.

Ripe Avocados

  1. Refrigeration: Once ripe, store avocados in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. They can last for 3-5 days.

Cut/Unused Avocados

  1. Lemon or Lime Juice: After cutting an avocado, squeeze some lemon or lime juice on the cut surface to prevent browning.
  2. Plastic Wrap: Wrap the avocado tightly in plastic wrap. This minimizes air exposure, which causes browning.
  3. Airtight Container: Place the wrapped avocado or just the cut side in an airtight container. Adding a piece of onion to the container can also help keep the avocado fresh because sulfur compounds in onions slow down oxidation.
