Jack Draper makes Davis Cup decision as agent provides statement after US Open vomiting | Tennis | Sport

Jack Draper will travel to Manchester on Tuesday to join up with the Davis Cup team. The British No.1 reached the US Open semi-final on Friday where he vomited three times on the court.

The new world No.20 admitted he was “banged up” but stated his desire to still represent his country.

And his agent Ben Draper said: “After a short turnaround following the US Open, Jack will be joining the team in Manchester on Tuesday ahead of the first match on Wednesday. Jack and his team are working hard to get fit and Leon will take all this into account when he makes his team section.”

Great Britain are in Group D and will face 2022 champions Canada, Finland and Argentina as they bid to qualify for the November finals in Spain.

Following Andy Murray’s retirement earlier this year, Draper will be joined by Billy Harris, Dan Evans and doubles stars Henry Patten and Neal Skupski.

Draper spewed up on the court in New York during his US Open semi-final against eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

Draper went down admirably as he refused to quit, testing his body to the extreme.

“I’m not going to retire in the semis of a Grand Slam. I know the last set, you know, it probably looked liked from courtside or on TV that it was, you know, not a great look,” he said.

“I was fighting hard. You know, I’m proud of myself. I tried to fight as hard as I can. Just not going to get it done against someone like that.”

Draper was competing in just his 10th Major main draw and he will take plenty of confidence into next season.

“I just need to keep on learning, keep on growing, keep on having situations like today where I came unstuck,” he said.

“It’s experiences, doing all the right things, it’s training consistently, and over time you just progress and you get stronger and you get better.”
