The last time you should mow your lawn this year

With the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, you’ll likely be focusing less on caring for your lawn in the coming months – but there may be time for one or two last mows before your lawnmower is moved back to the shed.

Speaking to the Express, lawn care specialist Chrissie Handley at onlineturf.co.uk has revealed just when you should stop mowing your lawn, and when it’s time to get the lawnmower back out.

She said: “You should mow your lawn for the final time before winter in late autumn on a high mower setting so that you’re not scalping the lawn.

“Your grass should only be mowed when conditions are dry as mowing wet, heavy and clumpy grass produces uneven and wonky results.

“It also risks damaging your grass blade strength for future mows, too.

“You should not mow during the winter and only look to mow again around late February when your grass begins to grow again.”

Chrissie added that there aren’t too many tasks to do for your lawn over winter, as she explained: “In winter, it’s always best to try and keep off your grass as much as possible, especially in damp or frosty conditions to minimise damage to your lawn.

“As your lawn will likely be in winter dormancy, there won’t be as many lawn care tasks that need doing in comparison to summer/autumn, however, staying on top of basic maintenance means your lawn stays healthy over the winter period.”

However, there is one task Chrissie recommends doing during the colder period. She says winter is the perfect time of year for weedingyour garden.

“During winter dormancy, not only does your grass growth slow but weed growth slows too. This means that it’s an ideal time to tackle them so that they’re unable to grow rampantly in spring,” she said.

She added: “Moist, loose soil can make it easier to pull weeds out by the root, so this process is best done in milder and wetter winter temperatures, rather than in freezing temperatures.

“If you make sure you’ve removed the entire root of the weed, this will eradicate them entirely and ensure they won’t grow back.”
