Hair stylist shares mistake you are making with your hair that ‘make you look older’

Hair is one of the first things people notice about you, and it’s a crucial part of how you view yourself.

But as you get older, your hair may start to change – maybe styles that you used to rock no longer have the same impact, or your hair starts to feel different to how it did when you were younger.

There are three things that you can do to make sure that your hair stays looking fabulous and youthful – and make sure your do isn’t dragging you down.

Nick Willis, Master Stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, has shared his expert tips with  express.co.uk to keep you looking stylish.

He said: “We want to look and feel our best, and that includes looking and feeling our age, or maybe even younger! What we don’t want is hair that ages us!”

The biggest mistake he sees clients make is choosing the wrong hair colour for their skin tone.

“We can look washed out and tired with the wrong hair colour; as we age our complexion evolves and we tend to lose pigment, known as melanocytes, this can make us look less radiant if we are choosing the wrong hair tones.”

A lot of people start to develop grey hair as they age but this can be a blessing for some.

“On some skin tones, grey hair can look flat and too ashy,” Nick commented. “On some people, grey hair is a statement and looks fabulous!”

He added that grey hair does have an ageing effect on people and can make you look older than your years, so adding some high and lowlights could help it look younger.

These should be subtle and blended into your natural hair colour to stand the test of time between your appointments.

It’s a common stereotype that older women often crop their hair short, but Nick thinks that long hair is “anti-ageing” when it’s done right.

“I would recommend that my client keeps their hair at a mid to long length; with the right shape and layering techniques, you will have movement and volume, both huge factors in looking and feeling younger!”

If you are keeping your hair long though, there are some protective measures you need to take.

“Use repairing and moisturising treatments at home and ask your stylist which are the best restorative products for your hair type. I like to use Olaplex in my colour, this is an advanced re-bonding treatment which repairs your hair and adds a youthful shine.”
