Recruitment expert shares how to answer baffling interview question

A recruitment expert has revealed the correct way to answer a simple but baffling question that many interviewees mess up.

Job interviews can be a daunting experience, even with all the prep and research you do before the meeting. Sometimes it is the seemingly innocuous queries that catch people out.

Emily The Recruiter, who shares her wisdom on TikTok, revealed exactly how to answer a standard interview question that she thinks often unsettles even the most prepared of minds. Speaking to her 642,700 followers, she said: “When the recruiter asks, why should we hire you? This is specifically what you are going to say. Coming from a recruiter who knows her s***.”

While this might seem like a simple question, Emily revealed it needs far more than a simple answer. Things like “because I’m gonna be really good at this job,” won’t suffice, she shared, explaining that employers are looking for a more rounded response.

Emily went on: “You’re gonna provide an answer that calls out the company, calls out the role, calls out your ambitions. It’s gonna sound like this.”

Giving the answer, she continued: “When I saw Google was hiring for a senior recruiter role, I knew that I had to apply because I really aligned to your company’s core values.

“When I did further research on the role itself, I knew I brought to the table all of the Excel and presentation skills that were critical for the position. And when I think about my career growth, I know Google is a company I’m keen on growing at, learning from, and investing in. So it seems like the perfect fit.”

Although many people were thankful for Emily’s advice, lots of people admitted a simple answer should be fine. One user suggested: “‘I need money to live’ should be an acceptable answer.”

Another person added: “I’d be annoyed if I was asked this. they invited ME to interview! they already think I have what they need, why should I have to BEG to work for you!?” And a third user shared: “‘Because I’m delightful, and a pleasure to be around’ — it has worked 100% of the time for me.”
