Sky customers fume as major issue leaves TVs unable to turn on


Sky customers have been reporting major disruption with their TV services, with some unable to even turn on their TV sets. The issues, confirmed by Sky, are affecting Sky Glass and Sky Stream services that rely on broadband connections to deliver TV channels rather than traditional satellite signals.

“Some Sky Glass/Stream customers are currently experiencing technical issues when trying to switch on their devices,” Sky posted on X from its Sky Help Team account just before 7pm on Thursday. “Our technical teams are working hard to fix this. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Many customers took to X to complain that their TVs wouldn’t function.

“This is an absolute disgrace. There shouldn’t be a problem. That stops your TV from even turning on!!”, said one X user.

“Any chance of an update? Day 2, still no TV.”, said another early on Friday morning.

Sky Glass is Sky’s all-in-one TV package where customers sign up for a contract that gives them an actual television set that has a set top box built into it.

“We are aware of an issue that some of our customers are having switching on their devices,” the Sky Help Team said. “Our technical teams are working hard to fix this. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

“We are sorry that some Sky Glass and Stream customers are currently experiencing issues when trying to switch on their devices,” a Sky spokesperson told Express.co.uk via email. “We advise those customers to manually restart to resolve the issue, a full guide can be found here https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-glass-stream-wont-turn-on.”

This fix applies to both Sky Glass and Sky Stream, the latter being the standalone set top box from Sky that runs on a broadband connection but requires you to provide your own TV.

The spokesperson declined to say when asked what had caused the issue or if it had been fully resolved for all customers.

In the replies to the above post on X some customers said that the fix worked for them, but others continued to say that this particular fix was not working and that they were still without access to their TV services.

When Express.co.uk reviewed Sky Glass after its 2021 release, technology editor Dave Snelling awarded it just three stars, saying “it’s not ready for prime time yet.”

“Unfortunately, in the nine months or so we’ve had Sky Glass, we have experienced one too many software bugs – preventing us from wholeheartedly recommending that everybody rush out to upgrade. It goes without saying that Glass is a terrible option for those who don’t want to upgrade to a new TV model.”
