Homemade cinnamon rolls are hard to beat, not least for the sweet, spiced smell that wafts from the oven as they cook. Finding a recipe that doesn’t involve spending hours in the kitchen perfecting the dough is a harder feat, however.
One savvy recipe creator has shared the clever baking shortcut she swears by for tantalisingly good cinnamon rolls without the effort.
Taking to TikTok to spread her revelation, The Self-Professed Chef (@theselefprofessedchef), said: “I keep seeing all these cinnamon rolls from a can hacks, but in Australia, we can’t get these. So I’ve come up with a cheat to making cinnamon rolls and using these premade doughballs that are super cheap at Woolies and Coles.”
Described as “delicious and devilish” by the TikTok star, the classic sweet treats are easy to make – perfect for the weekend.
For those in the UK, the Pizza Express Ready to Roll Pizza Dough is a great alternative and can be purchased for just £2 in Waitrose.
Cheat cinnamon roll recipe
Ingredients
(One Australian cup equals 250g)
Flour, for dusting
Four pre-made pizza dough balls
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup ground cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar or vanilla sugar
1/2 cup icing sugar
Juice of half a lemon
1/4 cup of water (63ml)
Method
First, dust a clean work surface with white flour then combine the four dough balls to form one large stretch of dough.
Carefully roll the dough out into a rectangle (as symmetrical as possible) using a wooden rolling pin. If the dough is hard to roll, leave it to sit for a few minutes and try again.
Add more flour as necessary to avoid sticking, but don’t add so much that it dries the dough out. Once suitably stretched, slather the butter over the dough using a spatula, taking care not to break the dough.
When the butter is in a single layer across the rectangle of dough, sprinkle over the ground cinnamon followed by the vanilla sugar. Ensure it is evenly distributed before rolling.
To roll the dough, start from the short end and carefully tuck and roll it up the length to form one long tube of dough. Now take a sharp knife or baker’s cutting tool to separate the roll into individual portions.
Four pizza dough balls should make around six cinnamon rolls, according to the TikTok star. Once sliced, grease a deep baking dish just large enough to fit the rolls in with butter, and carefully position them in the dish so they’re touching very closely.
It’s important not to leave any gaps between the rolls, according to @theselfprofessedchef. Transfer the rolls to the oven to cook at 200C for 25 minutes until nicely golden.
Meanwhile, make the glaze by combining the icing sugar, lemon juice and water in a bowl. Stir until combined and the glaze is runny but a little thick, then pour over the warm cinnamon rolls.
Tear the rolls apart and enjoy warm for the best results.
